Take a Break: Why It’s Okay to Do Nothing for 5 Minutes

Have you ever been in a situation where you start a project with maximum energy but one day in the morning you wake up and you feel doing nothing?

Situations like this are signs that your brain is telling you something, it needs a short break before you give it all those tasks you plan to do.

Never be ashamed of doing nothing when your body is feeling so. Here are some reason why it is okay to do nothing for 5 minutes.

1. Reboot your brain

To understand this point think of your brain as a computer, you see that when you are using your computer for heavy tasks like editing a long video it tends to heat up and slow down in action, the same happens to your brain after heavy tasks.

What we all do when our computers are slowing down is shutting down and turning on after few minutes or hit the restart.

During heavy tasks our brain works a lot as we think, it uses much ATP to get solutions of our tasks.

Doing nothing for 5 minutes will help it to calm down and settle giving it a good starting point to resume once again.

2. Reduction of stress

Most of the time when you want to complete many tasks in short time, your brain will be stressed while obeying your instructions.

Taking a break of 5 minutes will give your brain a rest and you as a person it will give you some time to think of a way to break down your tasks into smaller tasks that you can complete in the time you have hence reducing your stress burden.

Doing nothing for 5 minutes will lower your cortisol levels. Cortisol which is also referred to stress hormone, is hormone that is released to help your body respond to immediate challenges.

A lot of this hormone often lead to headache and increased blood pressure.

3. Boost your problem solving ability

We are know that people to talk much are more likely to make mistakes than people who talk less, the main reason is that people who talk less are giving time their brain to think on what they are to speak out.

When you take a break, you will giving time to your brain to think of a way it will overcome a certain challenge in a qualitative way. After a short time break you will find out that your decisions are qualitative and more effective.

4. Things to do when taking a short time break

4.1 Breath in and out

Breathing in out will help you to intake more oxygen into your body helping your brain power the neural cells with the ATP they need to function properly.

4.2 Calm down, think and reflect

When you take a break and still think stressfully that break will be useless. Just calm down, reflect on your past activity to see what you did well and what you did wrong and slowly think on how to accomplish your task.

5. Conclusion

Positive results don't come from constant activities, they come from quality activities. Whenever you feel you are not going to delivery quality work, just take a break and put your self into a condition where you feel you are good to step forward.
